sorry for the late reply. I have just started to get back into the swing of deer season. I sighted in my guns and bows this week. Anyway tips for deer hunting huh well there are tons of things that can be done. here are a few of the major ones: 1. Watch the wind. Deer have an excellent sense of smell and just because your not getting snorted at doesnt mean they dont smell you (if you are getting snorted your definately getting smelt). You can use scent protection if you choose. I do both I setup for the wind and use scent protection 2. Know your area. You should know the area that deer frequent trails, bed down areas, watering holes etc. You should also know what time of year to be in particular spots. example in early fall you normally do very well over salt and a watering hole as its hotter and the deer need more water. 3. Decide what kind of hunting your going to do. If your going for an all out trophy/wall hanger your going to hunt differently than if your going after just any legal deer. If your going for a trophy you have to realize that there are less of them around and you will see much less of them as they are smarter and fewer numbers. 4. Get up early and stay late. Deer are generally crepuscular: they are often active at dawn and dusk and sleep during the middle of the day and night. This does not, however, mean that you will not see them feeding during the middle of the day. Bucks are notorious for moveing around in the middle of the day. 5. Remain still! Do not move unless absolutely necessary! Do not fall asleep! This can be tricky when you remain so still, but falling asleep not only will lose you your deer, but it can also be quite dangerous if you are up in a tree stand. Also wear a harness if using a tree stand. 6. Move the site of your tree stand around. You do not want your deer to start associating deer stands with humans! I like to use climbing stands for this reason. I also use very well hid hangon stands. Bulky stands can give you away. 7. Do not Intrude. Try to avoid walking a long a deer trail or even walk parallel to one. Take the back route… walk up streams, etc. This one is often overlooked but if you take the time to go the hardway you will be suprised at the results. These are only a few deer hunting tips. Before hunting in a certain spot, is a good idea to ask locals hunters for their own, personal tips. Different areas can vary, and everyone has his or her own tricks of the trade. When asking a local hunter be sure that your not in direct competition with the hunter for he may tell you something thats not true so he/she can get the deer for themselves. These are pretty basic steps to being a successful deer hunter I hope this helped someone out there. |
