I did some extra scouting this weekend myself and found another big buck that I’m adding to my deerdays buck map. I’m going to setup in that area with a climber if nothing else to see if I can get some more information on this deer. It was interesting to read about your findings, let me know what you find out on the old runs/escape runs. |

Re:Pressured Big Bucks 11/01/2008 6:44 AM | | well I tried what you said and I didn’t find any swamp at all on the map must just be a large wet land area, I found more tree stands yesterday that makes 9 in that area. so I decided to go over to the left of this state Land in hopes that’s where the big buck came from and I have permission on this property so I drove back down across and back up the mountain with no deer sign any ware i went about 4 hundred yards away until I was about even to where I was in the swamp and all the area was real thick with 1 inch to 8 inch trees with some large oak trees left and no feed, I couldn’t shoot 50 yards if I wanted to. I started looking around and saw some single large tracks by a old tree stand. I went to the right keeping the wind to my left shoulder and went up the hill following what seemed to be a old run and came to a spot where it got even thicker and I started to smell a deer so I circled to my left keeping the wind in my face and found a bed and tracks leaving it from about a 110 pound deer so I got out of there with the wind in my face and came across 2 old tree stands a hundred yards away down the hill and a old lawn chair.one tree stand was the one I passed on the way up. If I was to set up there that would send my sent directly into that bed, I will have to waite and see if the old runs are escape runs used in the snow during shotgun. |

Gold Member | | 2. Re:Pressured Big Bucks 10/29/2008 8:41 PM | | | Reminess, I have a few basics that I do to locate big bucks. The first thing is to start with a topo map. You mentioned a swamp, try to find on the map an area of a small island in the swamp were a buck may bed during the day. Also look for steep hill slope that may have a small bench or outcrop for a possible daytime bed down area. Then scout, "big deer make big tracks". Find the buck track you want to check on and then check the "from" and "to" areas. Rubs, as you mentioned, especailly post rubs (bigger bucks) can tell you how the buck enters the area. In pre-rut, scrapes to me appear to be the best indicators, especially if the buck leaves a big track in the scrape (this is important because youger bucks usually scrape freqently and typically leave no track in the scrape). Look for the primary scrape (the one he visists the most). Hopefully this will give you a start. Have a safe and good season! |

How do you locate the bedding area without snow ? I was out scouting yesturday and came across a large rub in a small swamp, I know that most of the rubs are done at night. I figure that he would have to be at least a large 8 or better for my area. I see that he was heading down the moutain when he made this rub. I also found a few real small rubs about 1-1/2 mile away on the moutain top all rubs were heading up. This area also had at least 7 tree stands. |
