Two things come to mind: 1) have you checked the days you hunted with the deer days calculator? We have some members in our club that won’t even hunt a red day! I have found the calculator to be fairly accurate (to the point where I now plan my hunts aroung the green days), more accurate this year than last (seems to be getting better with time); and 2) how are you getting to your stand? I either walk or use a Bad Boy Buggy (electric, doesn’t make any noise and has no gas, oil, or exhaust smell). It’s easy for deer to pattern you when you get to your blind on a 4 wheeler or some motorized vehicle. It’s hard for deer to pattern what they can’t hear or smell. |

Re:Two Questions one on bringing deer in, 2nd, best X 01/10/2008 6:19 AM | | | the deer may not be getting to your stand site till late. more scouting may be need . or look at what your border farm have planted they may like the food better there. look at all posible thing. like cover that was a big thing on one of the farms I hunt.when i first stated hunting deer i had a farm with no cover lot of sign but they would be there late night not at moring or evening. good luck it may not be what you do. but what happing out of sight of your stand site |

Move your blind. Heck you might even have to move the area that you hunt. If there has been alot of night hunting in that area it can really hurt your deer population. |

You will have spells where you think you are doing everything right and no deer. I harvested a 10 point on the 9th of November and didn’t see another deer until the 21st of December, a 12 point. I have sense taken a doe on the 27th of December. The bottom line is you have to be out there to see them and take them. I live in South Carolina and believe it or not, those deer were on my 11 acre plot of land. Now during the previous spring and summer, I planted food plots, set out mineral licks and started the corn pile early. I scouted the trails and set my blinds/stands up accordingly. While it’s a small area of land, I’ve made it attractive to deer with natural plantings, food plots and mineral licks to hold them and keep them coming back to the area. Take a good book for the dry spells and just enjoy God’s creation. Deerslayer07 |

I HUNT EVENINGS DURING THE PRE AND POST RUT AND ALL DAY DURING THE RUT. IN ILLINOIS THE MAIN RUT IS FROM THE LAST WEEK OF OCT. TO THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK IN NOV. AND NO YOU CAN’T SAY EXACTLY WHEN THEY RUT, THEY RUT WHEN THEY NEED TO. I THINK THE BAROMETER HAS MORE TO DO WITH DEER MOVEMENT THEN ANYTHING ELSE, I LOVE WHEN IT SHOWS 30.0 AND FALLING. TRY SOME TRAIL CAMERAS TO SEE IF YOU CAN CATCH SOME DEER MOVEMENT AND SEE WHAT TIME THEY ARE MOVING TO COMPARE WITH WEATHER CONDITIONS,PER: BAR. TEMP. AND THE WIND, AND KEEP SOME RECORDS OF ALL THIS, IT WILL PAY OFF. NOT SURE ON THE FEED I CAN’T USE THAT HERE, BUT I DO KNOW THAT WHEN THE FARMER ACROSS THE ROAD PLANTS CORN I SEE ALOT MORE DEER COMPARED TO BEANS!!! IF I CAN HELP ANY MORE OR IF I HAVE AT ALL LET ME KNOW, I LOVE TO TALK WHITETAIL AND HEAR ALL I CAN ABOUT THEM. P.S. DON’T GIVE UP, HOLD OUT FOR THAT MONSTER, HE MAY ONLY SHOW UP EVERY TWO OR THREE YEARS (AT LEAST FOR ME!!) BUT HE WILL SHOW!!! AND KEEP TAKING THOSE DOES THEY EAT THE SAME AND LET THE YOUNGER BUCKS GROW UP. IT WILL HELP INTENSIFY THE RUT.

Two Questions one on bringing deer in, 2nd, best X 12/28/2007 12:18 PM | | I have been having some very bad luck hunting deer this year also last year and I am thinking it is because of the moon phase and I mean it is so bright you don’t need a flash light. Second, when is the best time to hunt, like early morning and evening, type feed, food attractants, stand position, cover scent, etc. I hunt in Frio county Devine, Texas. I use corn in a 55 gallon drum with timer, it feeds twice a day. I also rattle, grunt and use the Doe bleat, still nothing. I have even gone durning the week day, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. when there aren’t anyone out there. This is what I do; I enter the blind very early in the morning and remain there until last light. I carry MRE’s and keep two gallons of water in the blind at all times, one empty gallon container for body fluids. The blind is pretty air tight which is ten feet off the ground. Can my remaining deer season be salvaged? Thank you, Ples |
