Turkey hunting in the fall is quite different from hunting turkeys in the spring. For one thing, it is not breeding season so turkey calls are not of as much use. In the fall, turkeys separate into groups of hens and poults or groups of gobblers. If you see one hen, you are not likely to see a gobbler in the entire flock. Turkeys tend to stay down in the open fields eating bugs until a hard freeze. I often wonder where they come up with these weights for hunting. In Canada the law states you only need a bow that can shoot a minimum 39.7 lbs at or less than a 28" draw for deer and turkey, and 48.5 lbs for bear and moose! I am comfortable shooting at 59-62 lbs which i do.

I agree with Deer Crazy in SC however a word of caution. You should be very careful with useing low poundage simply because of laws. In Arkansas you aren’t suppose to shoot a bow with less than 50 pounds however Arkansas is one of the few states that will allow you to hunt with a crossbow without some sort of disability. Just try to keep up with the local laws the best you can.
They can have my bow when they pry it from my cold dead fingers!

In reply to the forum claiming that only 55lbs. of draw weight is needed to kill a deer, draw weight has nothing to do with being able to cleanly kill a deer.Their have been plenty of deer killed with bows of lesser draw weight.The amount of kinetic energy that is delivered by the arrow at impact is most crucial.A bow with only 40-45lbs. of draw is capable of killing, backed by a razor sharp broadhead and a well placed shot.So its not in how much you can draw,its more like how well you shoot.

The most important thing to remember when shooting a bow is that it only takes 55 pounds to kill a deer. That being said if you cant draw your bow smoothly then the draw weight is too much for you. Another thing to remember is that when your shooting you want to shoot a about 50 yards to start. This might sound insane to some people but when you get down to the nitty gritty of it you will be lucky to shoot at a deer over 20 yards. shooting at that distance makes all your closer shots that much more accurate. accuracy is the name of the game when bow hunting.

I have mine set at 73lbs while hunting. I can shoot accurately at 100lbs but I don’t hunt with it because it can be hard to pull back when your cold and got lots of clothes on and sitting down. My rule of thumb is if you can’t pull back your bow sitting down with ease then you should lower your poundage.

You should be able to point your knocked arrow at the deer and draw your bow back smoothly without having to strain much or raise your bow (or point) your bow to the sky.
